radiotherapy: Radiation therapy is frequently used to treat patients with cancer of the rectum and involves administering localized high-energy X-rays that destroy the malignant cells.

sigmoidoscopy: A scope that checks inside the rectum and the lower part of the colon with a lighted tube.

stoma: An opening, usually unnatural or surgically created, which connects a portion of the body cavity to the outside environment. Often used after colon surgery.

systemic therapy: Chemotherapy and biological therapy are systemic therapies.
